DESIGN

Pulse enlisted the expertise of Nick Whitaker and Roger D'Arcy of recording architecture, London to design the studio. Renowned for their work in acoustics, Nick and Roger have an international client base, designing award winning studios from Los Angeles to Tokyo, including the new BBC Pebble Mill studio. In designing The Engine Room, they were given an ideal environment to work with: a large spacious area, free of any existing structures that might hamper the acoustics. They chose to build three separate rooms, each in total isolation from the other, consisting of two live areas and a control room.

The smaller of the two live areas was designed primarily for drums and percussion. However, large wall-mounted reversible acoustic panels give great flexibility to the acoustics of the room, making it suitable for many applications.

The larger live room is approx. 450sq. ft. in size and is an all-purpose recording area. Acoustics in this room can also be manipulated using reversible panels. Natural light floods into this room from an enormous skylight, creating a bright, airy atmosphere for musicians to work in.
